Guidelines For Pyro-metallurgical Slags Copper Smelters

On August 18, 2023, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) released the Guidelines for the Management of Pyro-metallurgical Slags specifically tailored to Copper Smelters.

“hazardous waste” means any waste which by reason of characteristics such as physical,
chemical, biological, reactive, toxic, flammable, explosive or corrosive, causes danger or is
likely to cause danger to health or environment, whether alone or in contact with other
wastes or substances.

These guidelines serve to assist units within the Copper Smelting industry in effectively managing the substantial quantities of slags produced as a result of heightened pyro-metallurgical activities associated with the processing of copper concentrates, ensuring compliance, sustainability, and minimizing environmental impact.

The document outlines the manufacturing process employed by Copper Smelters and offers comprehensive directives for the proper handling and management of pyro-metallurgical copper slags.
