According to The Gujarat Factories Rules, 1963 a competent person must test a Hydro test every two years instead when an internal test cannot be performed because of construction. pressure vessels installed in the factory must test externally every six months and internally every year. In a continuous process plant, a Hydro test must be performed every four years.

When internal or bi-annual hydrostatic testing is not feasible because of the design and operation of pressure vessels, the manufacturer’s competent person may perform non-destructive tests such as ultrasonic or other tests every two years. However, the manufacturer must halt manufacturing in order to conduct this test. Gamma scanning, a recently developed non-destructive testing technology, will be regarded as acceptable if the pressure vessels are checked by it in order for the manufacturer to not interrupt the production process and to comply with the law.
