Revised discharge standards of effluent from tannery industry

MOEFCC has released Environment (Protection) Third & Fourth Amendment Rules, 2021 which define revised discharge standards of effluent from tannery industry applicable to all modes of disposal. As per the third amendment rules, revised standards are applicable with immediate effect. However, as per fourth amendment rules, revised discharge standards of effluent from tannery industry are applicable from July 2022. In case of direct disposal into rivers & lakes respective SPCB/PCC to take stringent steps depending on the quality of the receiving water body. These standards won’t be applicable in cases of disposal via marine outfall.

Maximum specific water consumption for processing hides/ skins: (monthly average
values)

  1. Raw-to-Wet blue/white – 20 m3 per ton of hides /skins
  2. Post-tanning process      – 20 m3 per ton of hides /skins
  3. Raw-to-finished               -40 m3 per ton of hides /skins

Maximum wastewater discharge= 85% of maximum water consumption
