Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021

MOEFCC has released Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021. There are new definitions added i.e. single-use plastic commodity, thermoset plastic, thermoplastic, non-woven plastic bag, plastic waste processing. As per the revised amended legal provision,

(1) carry bag made of virgin or recycled plastic, shall not be less than 75 microns in thickness after 30.09.2021 and

(2) carry bag made of virgin or recycled plastic, shall not be less than 120 microns in thickness after 31.12.2022.

(3) non-woven plastic carry bag shall not be less than 60 Gram Per Square Meter (GSM) with effect from 30.09.2021.

(4) manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of single use plastic, including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene, commodities (ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene – thermocol for decoration) shall be prohibited with effect from 01.07.2022.

(5) single use plastic products (made from composite plastic) include plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners with less than 100 microns
