Introduction
In response to industry requests, the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has extended the deadline for filing quarterly and annual returns under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022. The latest update of E-Waste returns extends the deadline from June 30, 2024, to August 31, 2024, aiming to address several challenges faced by recyclers and producers in submitting their data on time.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) received numerous representations from industry associations highlighting difficulties such as unfamiliarity with the new system, the need for corrections to data entries, and technical issues with the portal. These challenges have hindered many recyclers from entering their production data and generating Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Certificates. Recognizing these issues, the CPCB requested an extension from the Ministry.
The Ministry, upon reviewing the situation, agreed to extend the timeline in accordance with Rule 9A of the E-Waste (Management) Amendment Rules, 2024. This extension allows registered entities additional time to submit their returns for the Financial Year (FY) 2023-24. During this extended period, EPR Certificate generation and transfer activities will also continue on the EPR portal, ensuring that compliance processes remain uninterrupted.
The extended deadline until August 31, 2024, provides a significant relief to the e-waste recycling industry. Consequently, this extension enables them to comply with regulatory requirements without the added pressure of immediate deadlines. As a result, this move is expected to improve the accuracy and completeness of the data submitted. Ultimately, this will enhance the overall effectiveness of e-waste management in the country.
Conclusion
The Ministry’s decision to extend the filing deadline shows a proactive approach in addressing industry concerns while supporting the successful implementation of e-waste management policies. Moreover, it underscores the importance of collaboration between regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders to achieve environmental sustainability goals. This extension, approved by the competent authority, marks a crucial step in facilitating smoother compliance processes and advancing the nation’s e-waste management efforts. This is the latest update of E-Waste returns, ensuring that the industry can meet its obligations more effectively.
