Environment Auditor Code of Conduct

The Environment Auditor Code of Conduct establishes mandatory professional standards for Certified Environment Auditors (CEAs) and Registered Environment Auditors (REAs) under the Environment Audit Rules, 2025. The Code aims to ensure integrity, independence, professionalism, confidentiality, transparency and accountability during environmental audits.

Professional Conduct for Environment Auditors

CEAs and REAs must maintain high standards of integrity, impartiality and professional ethics. They must conduct assignments fairly, objectively and transparently while applying due diligence and professional judgment. Auditors must also comply with applicable environmental laws, regulations, guidelines and directions issued by the Central Government or EADA.

Accurate Environmental Audit Reporting

The Environment Auditor Code of Conduct requires audit findings, conclusions and recommendations to be supported by verifiable evidence. CEAs and REAs must accurately report material observations, risks and non-compliances and must not suppress, manipulate, conceal or falsify audit information. Adequate records and supporting documentation must also be maintained.

Confidentiality and Data Protection

Environment Auditors must maintain strict confidentiality regarding information obtained during an audit. Information about projects and project proponents cannot be disclosed to unauthorized persons unless disclosure is required by law or authorized by EADA. This confidentiality obligation continues even after completion, termination or expiry of certification or registration.

Conflict of Interest Requirements

CEAs and REAs must remain independent and avoid actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest. They cannot audit projects where they have a direct or indirect personal, professional or financial interest. They also cannot accept certain gifts, hospitality, commissions or benefits from auditees. REAs must provide a conflict-of-interest declaration before an audit begins.

Disciplinary Action for Violations

EADA can examine complaints and, after providing an opportunity to be heard, take actions including warnings, rectification or re-performance of an audit, withholding assignments or audit costs. Serious misconduct may lead to suspension, revocation or debarment under the Environment Audit Rules, 2025.

The Environment Auditor Code of Conduct provides a structured framework for ethical, independent and evidence-based environmental auditing. CEAs, REAs and REA Firms must follow these requirements to maintain the credibility and accountability of the Environment Audit framework.
